AGM and Lead-Acid Batteries: The Pros and Cons

If you are looking to replace the battery in your motorcycle or car, you may be wondering what the difference is between AGM batteries and traditional lead-acid battery cells. Below is a guide to these two types of batteries which will help you to decide which one is right for you.

Lead-acid batteries

Traditional lead-acid batteries consist of two sheets of lead which are suspended within an electrolyte acid solution. These batteries present a number of hazards such as leaks which can result in corrosive liquid damaging your vehicle or bike.

The pros and cons of choosing a lead-acid battery

Lead-acid batteries are typically much cheaper than modern AGM batteries. However, the reduced cost also reflects the reduced life span of this type of battery. While the exact life span of a battery will depend on how well it is maintained and the conditions in which it is used, typically, a lead-acid battery will reach the end of its life before an AGM battery does. However, one advantage of opting for a lead-acid battery is that it is possible to top up the electrolyte solution during routine maintenance.

AGM batteries

AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. An AGM battery has a glass mat inside it. The purpose of this glass mat is to hold the electrolyte in one place so it can then wick between the battery plates. Because the electrolyte is held within the glass mat, you do not need to worry about any leakage of electrolyte if the battery is damaged.

The pros and cons of choosing an AGM battery

The biggest drawback of opting for an AGM battery is the cost. AGM batteries typically cost much more than traditional lead-acid batteries. However, the increased price buys you a battery which can hold a charge for a much longer amount of time. Also, the unique design of AGM batteries also reduces the chance that a battery will fail due to loss of electrolyte liquid. However, one major drawback of AGM batteries is that you cannot conduct the same level of maintenance on them as you can a traditional lead-acid battery. If you have a problem with your AGM battery, there is very little you can do except take it to an auto repair shop.
